NORC December Monthly Meeting

The North Oakland Republican Club (NORC) met on Thursday, December 9 at the 300 Bowl in Waterford, Michigan. It was the last NORC meeting to be held there since the club will be meeting at the Pontiac Country Club beginning in January 2005. President Jim Runestad called the meeting to order at approximately 7:30 p.m. The club participated in the Pledge of Allegiance and silent prayer.

Former Michigan State House Majority Leader, and current Republican State Party chair candidate, Andrew “Rocky” Raczkowski, was the speaker for the evening. Mr. Raczkowski spoke largely on his involvement in Operation Enduring Freedom in the Horn of Africa as an Army Reservist. He told fascinating personal stories from his days in Africa. Mr. Raczkowski explained that Osama bin Laden grew his terrorist organization in Africa upon being deported to the Sudan from his native Saudi Arabia. He posed the question, “Are we winning the war on terror?” His answer was, “Yes, one person at a time.” Responding to criticisms that U.S. troops are not well-equipped he said, “Our troops truly are taken care of. It may take a little while, but we get it.”

Mr. Raczkowski’s opponent for state party chair, Mr. Saul Anuzis, arrived later in the evening and was given the opportunity by Mr. Runestad to address the club.

Reports were given by Treasurer Steve Perry and Membership/Fundraising Director Jim Thienel. Mr. Thienel reported that NORC membership is approximately 175 members. He also updated the NORC members on the complaint that he and Mr. Runestad filed against Waterford Township Clerk Betty Fortino regarding an election night dispute.

The following NORC members were elected unanimously to two-year terms: Jim Runestad (President), Dennis Pittman (Vice-President), Steve Perry (Treasurer), Gregory Fogleman (Secretary), and Jim Thienel (Membership and Fundraising).
