Even if you haven't heard of Joe Knollenberg, you probably know of his accomplishments for Michigan:
-> Improving Education
-> Cutting Taxes
-> Protecting Social Security
-> Making Prescription Drugs Affordable
Following the 2000 census, the boundaries, and the number, of the congressional district I represent have changed. I now represent Michigan's Ninth Congressional District, which encompasses all or part of Auburn Hills, Berkley, Beverly Hills, Bingham Farms, Birmingham, Bloomfield Hills, Bloomfield Township, Clawson, Farmington Hills, Farmington, Franklin, Keego Harbor, Lake Angelus, Oakland Township, Orchard Lake, Orion Township, Pontiac, Rochester Hills, Rochester, Royal Oak, Sylvan Lake, Troy, Waterford, and West Bloomfield Township.
I look forward to the opportunities and challenges of representing the 22 cities and townships of the Ninth District. Some I have not represented before and some I have represented since 1992, but all will receive the attention, the service, and the open door that my constituents deserve.
Hard work, common sense and results.
The 108th Congress has many important issues before it, from improving the economy, adding a prescription drug benefit to Medicare, and passing a comprehensive national energy policy to the war in Iraq, homeland security, and North Korea. I look forward to working with President Bush and my colleagues in Congress on these and other issues to make the United States a safer and stronger country.
Joe's Biography
Joe Knollenberg began his sixth term in Congress on January 7, 2003, when he was sworn-in to represent the people of Michigan’s Ninth Congressional District.
Joe spent his first ten years in office (1993-2002) representing Michigan’s 11th District, which stretched from western Wayne County to southwest Oakland County. Following the 2000 Census, Michigan’s congressional districts were redrawn and Knollenberg’s home fell in the new Ninth District, which consists of 22 cities and townships entirely in Oakland County.
Joe is best known at home for his strong record of constituent service and focus on improving the quality of life in Southeast Michigan. He is particularly proud of the dedication his staff shows to helping constituents navigate the federal bureaucracy as well as his efforts to secure federal funds to help clean up the Rouge River, to redirect federal resources to the Northern Border so that Detroit-area border crossings with Canada are secure and efficient, and to promote free trade agreements that bring high-paying jobs to our part of Michigan.
Joe also continues to rise through the ranks of the U.S. House of Representatives hierarchy. As a subcommittee chairman on the powerful House Appropriations Committee, he wields great influence over the federal budget.
Michigan voters know a good thing when we see one.
Following a successful stint as Chairman of the House Appropriations Subcommittee for the District of Columbia in the 107th Congress, where he produced bills that achieved previously unheard of bipartisan support, Joe was selected to head the House Appropriations Subcommittee for Military Construction. In this post, he will oversee funding for military construction projects in the United States and overseas, military family housing operations and construction, U.S. contributions to the NATO Security Investment Program, and the bulk of base realignment and closure costs.
On the Appropriations Committee, Joe serves on two other subcommittees in addition to the subcommittee he chairs. His work on the Subcommittee on Foreign Operations has distinguished him as a leader on foreign policy issues, particularly on aid to the Middle East and on North Korea. He also currently serves as Republican Co-Chair of the Congressional Armenian Caucus.
Additionally, Joe serves on the Subcommittee on Veterans Affairs, Housing and Urban Development, and Independent Agencies, which includes the Environmental Protection Agency and NASA. In this post, he has championed the Great Lakes, reform of the EPA, low-income housing programs, and improved medical care for veterans. He is also a recognized congressional expert on energy issues.
In his ten years in Congress, Joe has earned a reputation for his hard work and his common sense approach that has produced results for his constituents and the entire state of Michigan. As Vice President Dick Cheney noted in a August 2002, “Both Republicans and Democrats respect his diligence, his viability, his good judgment.”
Prior to running for Congress, Joe ran a small business in Troy, and was involved extensively in local and civic affairs. His sons, Marty and Steve, now run the family business.
DELIVERING RESULTS. AS PROMISED.
Congressman Joe Knollenberg is working to deliver a bright future for Michigan. For the last 12 years, Joe has been fighting for Congress to ensure that Michigan's voices are heard. We need to keep him there fighting for us.
Joe and his wife Sandie have lived in Oakland County for the past 35 years. They currently reside in Bloomfield Township.
I encourage all my constituents to contact me on any issues of importance to you. Please be advised that traditional mail sent to my Washington office is now taking longer to reach me because of heightened security procedures and may, unfortunately, result in a delay in my response.
